On Tuesday, September 10, the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Ellmer College of Health Sciences at С»ÆƬÊÓƵ held its annual "Faculty & Staff Welcome Back and Awards" in the new health sciences building. The event provided a relaxed atmosphere where faculty and staff could socialize and reconnect during the busy start of the semester.

С»ÆƬÊÓƵ President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., gave a presentation reviewing the previous academic year and sharing exciting plans for the year ahead, including a focus on innovative teaching methods and enhancing experiential learning opportunities for students. Following his remarks, he opened the floor for a Q&A session with attendees.

Bonnie Van Lunen, Ph.D., Interim Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Ellmer College of Health Sciences, also addressed the group. Her warm and encouraging remarks highlighted the importance of focusing on the positive impact faculty and staff have on students, and the camaraderie with each other. She also emphasized her pride in the award winners and encouraged continued recognition of deserving colleagues at the university level and beyond.

During her remarks, Dr. Van Lunen took a moment to introduce and warmly welcome the college's new faculty members, including Alvis Edwards (Clinical Assistant Professor, School of Medical Diagnostic and Translational Sciences), Victoria Reynolds (Assistant Professor, School of Speech-Language Pathology), Melissa Sullivan (Assistant Professor, School of Dental Hygiene), Natalie Yarish (Assistant Professor, School of Exercise Science), and Jaison Wynne (Lecturer, School of Exercise Science). Their addition brings new energy and expertise to the college.

The event concluded with the presentation of faculty and staff awards, led by Assistant Professor and Senior Clinic Coordinator for the School of Dental Hygiene, Jessica Suedbeck, chair of the awards committee. Below are this year's honorees:

• Rising Star Faculty Teaching Award: Leslie Prom was recognized for her innovative teaching techniques, including real-world examples and interactive activities that foster critical thinking and high academic achievement.
• Rising Star Staff Award: Marcelina Wade received praise for her empathetic advising, where she empowers students to navigate their academic paths while prioritizing mental health and self-care.
• Rising Star Researcher Award: Danika Pfeiffer was honored for her collaborative approach to clinical scholarship and her exceptional achievements in peer-reviewed research.
• Outstanding Staff Award: Matt Soricelli was celebrated for his technical expertise and problem-solving skills, going above and beyond to support faculty with IT needs.
• Outstanding Preceptor Award: James Coble stood out for his commitment to continuous teaching and mentorship during clinical rotations, ensuring students are both challenged and supported.
• Outstanding Faculty Professional Service Award: Mira Mariano was acknowledged for her leadership on the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy and her contributions to advancing standards of care in the profession.
• Outstanding Alumni Award: Brian Beaulieu was recognized for his leadership in physical therapy, overseeing over 450 clinics as a Senior Vice President of Clinical Operations for Athletico.
• Outstanding Use of Technology in Teaching Award: Amber Hunt was honored for her innovative use of instructional videos in dental hygiene education, which helped students excel in practical exams.
• Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award: Shelly Beaver was celebrated for her dedication to preparing students for careers in recreational therapy through hands-on learning and curriculum innovation.
• Outstanding Mentor Award: Beth Jamali was lauded for her tireless mentorship of both students and faculty, fostering professional growth and excellence.
• Outstanding Doctoral Mentor Award: Julie Cavallario was recognized for her unwavering support and mentorship of doctoral students, helping them navigate challenges and celebrate successes.
• Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award: Angela Wilson was applauded for her efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across the college, culminating in her recognition as the University’s overall Diversity Champion for 2024.
• Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award: Chris Boykin was honored for his impactful teaching and mentorship in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, using his extensive experience to guide students in clinical excellence.

The event served as a great start to the academic year, with a strong sense of community and excitement for what’s ahead. The Ellmer College of Health Sciences continues to lead the way in teaching, research, and service.
